Getting Sufficient Fluid into Hands

This month’s tip comes from Phil Jeffries, an embalmer from Pennsylvania.  He has been licensed since 1967, and was one of the original GI embalmers in Vietnam, in Danang Mortuary.

Often hands seem to get only marginal fluid; this is sometimes due to IVs. Before raising radial artery, try applying a wrap of tape between the elbow and wrist. This should be tight enough to constrict superficial veins and bring fluid to surface by creating slight resistance to venous return. On a larger scale, I have found that partially restricted jugular drainage (50% flow or less) will also get fluid to the surface.
